A still spry 82 at the time, the legendary triple threat was finally retiring with a gig in the city that was her home away from home, Las Vegas. Carrie Fisher, Reynolds’ daughter, sparked to the idea of capturing that moment on film. Read More: // here

Born in Beverly Hills, Calif. on October 21, 1956, Carrie Fisher celebrates her 60th birthday Friday. The daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, the star got an early introduction to Hollywood thanks to her famous parents. She picked up minor roles in her teens before skyrocketing to fame as Princess Leia in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. She continued the iconic role in subsequent Star Wars movies and specials, also adding to her résumé with small-screen projects and books. Decades later, Fisher is just as beloved and is continuing her family’s Hollywood dynasty as her daughter, Billie Lourd, strikes out on her own. In honor of Fisher’s 60th birthday, see photos of the star through the years, ahead. Read More: // here

HBO’s Sheila Nevins soon airs “Bright Lights,” 89 minutes on the six-decade in/out, love/hate saga of Debbie Reynolds and (by temporary husband Eddie Fisher) daughter Carrie Fisher. Producer Fisher Stevens: “The mother-daughter story makes you think about your own family, mortality. Until recently, Debbie, 84, did her nightclub act. Now ailing, winding down, she’s retired. Less mobile, not getting around, she loved the documentary and said, ‘Wish we’d done this sooner.’” Read More: // here

A minute spent with Carrie Fisher is a minute spent entertained. As proved by Bright Lights, the up-close-and-personal documentary project of which Fisher is subject, no discernible fatigue by her compulsion toward the riotous and bawdy sets in when you string 95 of these minutes together. From beginning to end, Fisher has her audience, her documentarian, and everyone she comes into contact with onscreen efficient ensconced in her every word… many of which are quite suggestive, in one way or another. Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds
Directed by Alexis Bloom & Fisher Stevens
USA, 2016, DCP, 96m
Carrie Fisher and her mom Debbie Reynolds are now the best of friends (they live steps away from each other in their Beverly Hills compound) and the very definition of Hollywood royalty. But unlike today’s newly minted celebrities, they are both open books. After six decades of screen and stage stardom; a couple of disastrous marriages and assorted financial ups and downs for Reynolds; and, for Fisher, well-publicized drug addiction, bipolar disorder, and deity status (see: Star Wars), neither has anything left to hide. Bright Lights is an affectionate, often hilarious, and unexpectedly moving valentine to the mother-daughter act to end all mother-daughter acts. An HBO Documentary Films release.
