Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Content Group is acquiring U.S. rights to The Public, the drama written, produced and directed by Emilio Estevez. He also stars in the film, which first screened at last year’s Santa Barbara Film Festival before having its official world premiere in September at the Toronto Film Festival. Read More here

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release the critically acclaimed drama The Wife digitally Jan. 22, and on Blu-ray and DVD Jan. 29. Based on the novel by Meg Wolitzer, the story provides a revealing look into the 40-year relationship of Joan and Joe Castleman, (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) and the world of literature for female writers. As Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, the win threatens to expose the details and arrangements that define their marriage. Continue here

Coming-of-age drama “We the Animals” has scored a leading five Spirit Awards nominations, with “Eighth Grade,” “First Reformed,” and “You Were Never Really Here” taking four each. Nominations were announced on Friday morning by “Crazy Rich Asians” star Gemma Chan and Molly Shannon at the W Hotel in Hollywood. The awards ceremony will take place on Feb. 23 — the day before the Academy Awards — in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, Calif. The show, now in its 34th year, will air on IFC.

After announcing its pick-up of Trautmann at the start of the week, new distribution outfit Parkland Entertainment has acquired Emilio Estevez’s The Public for the UK.

The film, which is being sold at AFM by the Capstone Group, has an ensemble cast that includes Estevez, Alec Baldwin, Jena Malone, Taylor Schilling, Christian Slater, Che “Rhymefest” Smith, Gabrielle Union, Jacob Vargas, Michael K Williams and Jeffrey Wright. The deal was negotiated by Tom Stewart, Acquisitions Director of Parkland Entertainment and Pia Patatian, VP, Sales at Capstone Group.
