Fresh from his Palme d’Or triumph in Cannes, the Japanese director of “Shoplifters,” Hirokazu Kore-eda, confirmed that his next film will feature two of France’s biggest stars Juliette Binoche and Catherine Deneuve. They are to be joined by Ethan Hawke and Ludivine Sagnier (“8 Women”). “La Verite” (which translates as ‘The Truth’ in English) will shoot entirely in France in October and November this year. The film is being jointly produced by French firm 3B Productions and Kore-eda’s Bunbuku. Paris-based Wild Bunch is set as the international sales agent. A release in 2019 is penciled in, with Gaga set as the Japanese distributor and sales agent in Asia, excluding China. Read More here

When Ethan Hawke was born, his great-grandmother believed he was destined to become a minister—to heed God’s calling where the other men in his family hadn’t. Looking back, Mr. Hawke believes, this was just “wishful thinking.” His grandfather, for example, served as a minor-league baseball commissioner and was elected to five terms in the Texas state legislature, but Hawke’s great-grandmother “always thought that he wasted his talents in politics, when he should have been converting souls instead of votes,” Mr. Hawke said in a recent interview with America. “I think she was just projecting that I would pick up where he had dropped the ball. Hawke made his film debut in Joe Dante‘s 1985 film, “Explorers” and 33 years later has received some of the best reviews of his career for 2018’s “First Reformed,” which is currently playing in theaters across the country. Director Paul Schrader may have drawn out Hawke’s career-best work in a film that amounts to a full-blown cinematic existential crisis. The four-time Oscar nominee wrangles with Schrader’s questions, searching in vain for their answers, internalizing brimming panic with aplomb. It’s a tour de force. (KT)
