Coming-of-age drama “We the Animals” has scored a leading five Spirit Awards nominations, with “Eighth Grade,” “First Reformed,” and “You Were Never Really Here” taking four each. Nominations were announced on Friday morning by “Crazy Rich Asians” star Gemma Chan and Molly Shannon at the W Hotel in Hollywood. The awards ceremony will take place on Feb. 23 — the day before the Academy Awards — in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, Calif. The show, now in its 34th year, will air on IFC.

I had actually completely forgotten about Joe Dante’s EXPLORERS until just this moment, but it all came flooding back immediately. The 1985 coming-of-age sci-fi film starred Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jason Presson as three young teenagers who came together to build a spaceship after one of them had recurring dreams about a blueprint of some kind. The film eventually gathered a cult following but was considered a box-office flop as Paramount Pictures forced Dante to finish the film before he was ready. Read More here

If we’re a generation past the point of finding Nick-Hornby-style nerd behaviour lovable or endearing, let’s just say we have a lot in common with Annie (Rose Byrne), the main character in Juliet, Naked, who finds herself essentially stuck in a Nick Hornby romcom – it’s derived from his 2009 novel, in fact – with no easy escape. Every so often you have to pinch yourself in this industry, and standing there, watching Ethan Hawke sing Waterloo Sunset live on a film set, was one such moment. The only downside was, as one of our favourite songs of all time, we had to listen to it about fifty times over. Which isn’t fun whoever is on lead vocals. This indelible moment came on the set of Juliet, Naked – the latest cinematic adaptation from the work of Nick Hornby, directed by Jesse Peretz – the founding member of successful band The Lemonheads. We were fortunate enough to spend a day on the London set, where we spoke to Ethan Hawke, who plays has been singer-songwriter Tucker Crowe, and Rose Byrne, the lead role of Annie. For Hawke, it was a character – and a world – he felt very close to, which he felt had a positive impact on his performance. Read More here

Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director/CEO) will soon present a new Broadway production of Sam Shepard’s Tony & Pulitzer Prize-nominated drama True West, directed by James Macdonald (The Children). True West stars Ethan Hawke as “Lee” and Paul Dano as “Austin.” The cast also includes Marylouise Burke as “Mom” and Gary Wilmes as “Saul Kimmer.” TRUE WEST will begin preview performances on December 27, 2018 and officially open on Broadway on Thursday, January 24, 2019. This will be a limited engagement at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway (227 West 42nd Street). Read More here
