One of the last film panels at SXSW featured four-time Oscar-nominated Ethan Hawke. An Austin native, Hawke has a deep connection with the city has appeared in many films set in the city and collaborating with fellow Texan Richard Linklater on numerous iconic indies including the coming-of-age opus and Before Sunrise franchise. With his films Blaze and First Reformed making his debut in his hometown, SXSW is fitting for Hawke’s sensibilities and passion for genre and independent film. As Hawke sat down with IndieWire’s Eric Kohn in front of a packed house to talk about his career which spans of three decades as well as his some of his most iconic films including the Before franchise, Reality Bites, Boyhood, and, of course, his very first film Explorers. ‘Tesla’ is being introduced to buyers at the EFM in Berlin. Ethan Hawke is looking set to follow the likes of Nicholas Hoult (The Current War) and David Bowie (The Prestige) by playing electricity pioneer Nikola Tesla. Read More here

The festival, marking its 35th edition, will bestow its Icon Award on French actress and recent Oscar nominee Isabelle Huppert (‘Elle’).

Oscar-winning filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) and renowned American screenwriter and director Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, Affliction) will attend the festival for Marquee presentations of their newest films. Hazanavicius will present Godard Mon Amour, his seriocomic look at Jean-Luc Godard’s love affair with the actress Anne Wiazemsky during the shooting of his classic films La Chinoise and Weekend. Schrader will present First Reformed, a dramatic thriller starring Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried and Cedric the Entertainer. They join previously announced participants Mateo Gil and Jean-Marc Barr in the Marquee section.

The South by Southwest Conference and Festivals has added Lena Dunham, Ethan Hawke, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson, Tatiana Maslany, and Spike Lee to its lineup. The event, which takes place March 9 to March 18 in Austin, also announced Tuesday that it has added several other notable speakers, including activist Chelsea Manning; “Westworld” cast members Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, and Jeffrey Wright; and YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki. Lionsgate and sister company Roadside Attractions have acquired U.S. rights from Los Angeles Media Fund to Jesse Peretz’s romantic comedy “Juliet, Naked,” starring Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke, and Chris O’Dowd. A summer release is planned for the film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 19. Read More here
