More than two decades have passed since he wooed audiences as the loveable future son-in-law of Steve Martin in “Father of the Bride,” but even as he approaches his 50th birthday, George Newbern still has that boy-next-door appeal. Fortunately for Newbern, who recently joined’s “Express Written Consent,” that hasn’t prevented him from spanning his acting wings to roles that aren’t quite so wholesome. These days, for example, you can find him playing the role of Charlie, the former CIA agent/snarky B613 assassin in the ABC hit show “Scandal.” Continue here

The third season capped off with Olivia (Kerry Washington) inadvertently fulfilling her father’s wishes of leaving Washington D.C. with Jake (Scott Foley) in a bid to fix everything, but she did anything but. Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) won the election, but it came at a steep price: Rowan (Joe Morton) had First Son Jerry Jr. (Dylan Minnette) killed to ensure Fitz would score the sympathy vote and pinned it on Olivia’s terrorist mommy Maya Pope (Khandi Alexander). Harrison was the only one to figure out the truth, so Rowan promptly made sure there were no witnesses. This all came after Fitz finally learned that his father Big Jerry (Barry Bostwick) had raped First Lady Mellie (Bellamy Young) years prior, which caused the initial divide in their marriage. The Silver Dollar Room makes another ’80s film appearance as the Blues Club where babysitter Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) and her brood are forced by Albert Collins to sing the ‘Babysitting Blues’ for their exit pass. Oh the drama! Blame HBO’s “True Detective” for turning this year’s race — made more intense by dozens of hot acting contenders — into the most competitive.
Network: ABC
Contenders: Nashville, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Resurrection, Once Upon a Time, Agents of SHIELD
Best bets: Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy. The network most recently appeared in the category in 2010, when 2005 winner Lost was nominated a final time. Shonda Rhimes’ two hit series lead the pack this year: Grey’s scored noms in 2006 and 2007.
