Remember back when we used to say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe had a villain problem? Sure, there was Loki, but the majority of miscreants in the first two phases of the franchise failed to leave much of an impression. Nowadays, you never hear folks say this and there’s one big reason for that: Thanos. After years of build-up, Marvel actually managed to stick the landing with the Mad Titan as he proved a compelling, layered antagonist in last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, as well as returning in Avengers: Endgame. But what’s the secret of Thanos’ success?

Why did three studios book new titles against Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame‘s second weekend? They truly believed they were counterprogramming the monster hit and could somehow survive: Lionsgate’s Long Shot with females, The Intruder with African Americans and STXfilms’ foray into feature animation UglyDolls aimed at young girls. They knew what they were doing and blaming Endgame–which is now looking at a $146.9M second weekend (currently the second best second weekend ever after Star Wars: Force Awakens’ $149.2M)–is like saying the dog ate their homework. One B.O. analytics source even cynically opines to us, “It’s quite conceivable that even without Endgame, none of these films would have performed.” Endgame can celebrate that it’s crossing $600M in a record 10 days by Sunday, faster than Force Awakens (12 days), Infinity War (26 days) and Black Panther (31 days). “Avengers: Endgame” shattered just about every conceivable opening weekend box office record with its unprecedented $1.22 billion global debut. The hype surrounding Marvel’s epic finale is nothing like Hollywood has seen before. But does the blockbuster have enough momentum to become the highest grossing movie of all time? Read More here

All numbers are in, and Disney/Marvel’s record domestic weekend moola marathon for Avengers: Endgame will settle at $357.1M. Disney called the weekend at $350M, but when you’re dealing with such high numbers and records, you don’t want to walk any money back on Monday. The rest of the town knew it was north of $354M on Sunday morning. Read More here

With an estimated global opening weekend on course for $1.1 billion, Disney Avengers: Endgame will make what most successful superhero movies earn in a theatrical lifetime. At this level, film finance experts tell Deadline that the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed sequel will near cash breakeven tomorrow on Sunday, which is unheard of for a major studio tentpole during its opening weekend. Last year, the duo’s Avengers: Infinity War clicked into profitability after ten days. Read More here

Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame has now collected $487M worth of infinity stones at the international box office. That’s through Friday, and does not include an estimated $82.4M in China on Saturday which pushes Iron Man, Cap, Thor and the gang across the $300M mark there. With domestic’s $156.7M estimate through Friday, the global total (again, excluding China’s Saturday) is $643.7M. We are looking at a worldwide opening over $1.1B, an all-time — and mindboggling — industry record. Read More here
