Ringside Report Looks Back at GONE WITH THE WIND

The epic Civil War drama GONE WITH THE WIND is truly a wonderful film, and whether you like the film or not, you can’t help but recognize it achievements; it’s beautifully shot, masterfully directed and features superb performances by some of the most acclaimed stars in all of film. It’s been hailed as one of the greatest motion pictures of all time. It cemented itself in film history when it won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 12th Annual Academy Awards in 1940. Blu-ray Review: THE HEIRESS, An Age-Old Tale of Love and Loss

Directed by William Wyler (Ben-Hur, Jezebel, Wuthering Heights) in 1949, The Heiress is an adaptation of Henry James’ “Washington Square.” More accurately, Wyler’s feature drama is the film version of a stage adaptation, written by Ruth and Augustus Goetz from the James novel. Continue here

From Silents to the Seventies: The Snake Pit

The first Hollywood film to seriously address the nature of mental illness, The Snake Pit paved the way for other harrowing portraits like The Three Faces of Eve and Sybil. It also features a raw, riveting performance from Olivia de Havilland. Though far from cheery and a bit overblown, director Anatole Litvak’s film nevertheless shines a much-needed light on a subject that’s far too often ignored. Continue here
