On a recent Saturday morning, as I lamented a spate of curiously timed toxic Green Book stories that surfaced as the Oscar nomination voting began, right after the film won a Best Picture Golden Globe, I listened in the car as a sports radio host on New York’s WFAN randomly talked about how he’d seen a movie the night before. He had little expectation going in, and was surprised how good it made him feel, and how strongly those in the theater responded to the performances and an entertaining movie with a message about tolerance. Save for a pair of recent back-to-back discrepancies in “The Big Short” and “La La Land,” the Producers Guild’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Theatrical Motion Pictures has been a fairly reliable barometer for the annual Oscar season outcome. At least, ever since both the PGA and film Academy expanded their top categories, sharing the ever mysterious preferential ballot for determining nominees and winners, it’s been safe to say whatever wins the producers’ honor is your best picture frontrunner. U.S. arthouse buyer Film Movement has picked up North American rights to seven movies for its classics label, including John Woo’s first contemporary action film Heroes Shed No Tears (1984) and Viggo Mortensen starrer The Reflecting Skin (1990) by Philip Ridley (U.S. rights only). Read More here

The SAG Awards are January 27 at the Shrine Auditorium, simulcast live by Turner’s TNT and TBS. As previously announced, Alan Alda will receive the guild’s Life Achievement Award during the ceremony.
